Mapperton Estate: Rewilding scheme transforms farmland

The Mapperton Estate in west Dorset is one of the latest examples of a growing trend towards rewilding in the UK.

Faced with dwindling agricultural revenues and the need for significant repairs, the owners of the estate have decided to return 450 acres (182 hectares) of unproductive farmland to nature.

The resulting wilderness will provide a home for wildlife and help to trap carbon, while also offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy guided walking tours and overnight stays.

Luke and Julie Montagu’s rewilding project is the subject of a BBC documentary

The project is expected to receive government funding through the Countryside Stewardship scheme, which will provide an annual subsidy of £499 per hectare for 10 years.

As more landowners consider rewilding as a way to generate income and protect the environment, Mapperton’s example is likely to be replicated across the country.

Last year, work began on a Rewilding project at the Montagu family estate.

The goal of the project is to improve the habitat by introducing native animals and plants. So far, white park cattle, Exmoor ponies, Iron Age pigs, and beavers have been introduced. The animals are grazing, which helps to restore the landscape.

The Montagu family is also planning to build a visitor center and overnight accommodation in converted farm buildings.

The project is not only about helping the ecology and climate crisis – it’s also about giving people more opportunities to connect with nature.

The project is featured in a BBC documentary To the Manor Farm, part of the We Are England series.
